About Dermot

Dermot is a graduate of Galway University, The Institute of Bankers in Ireland and Northumbria University.

After spells in the Manchester offices of corporate law specialists Turner Parkinson and national firm Freeths, Dermot came to reside in the North East in 2011 and joined Close Thornton in 2016 following a number of years in private practise. He became a Partner in the firm in May 2017.

Dermot was elected to the Council of the Tees Valley Law Society in 2012 and currently holds the office of President.

Areas of Work

Commercial property, business sales/acquisitions, company law, partnerships, joint ventures and commercial contracts. Dermot has lectured on aspects of company and consumer law and is a recognised annual contributor to the World Bank ‘Doing Business’ report. In addition to his business law practise, Dermot is a keen advocate of alternate dispute resolution and is qualified as a Commercial Mediator.

Outside Interests

Dermot enjoys music (he is a member of the Newcastle Guitar Orchestra), sport and travel.
